Asia Pacific Climate Week 2021 Side event
"Utilizing forest functions for mitigating and adapting to climate change"
"Utilizing forest functions for mitigating and adapting to climate change"
Date
July 7, 2021 from 08:00 to 08:55 (JST)
Concept
To address the challenges of climate change, it is necessary to consider both mitigation and adaptation measures. Forest ecosystems and their sustainable management can contribute both to mitigation and adaptation as an integral part of the climate solution. As for mitigation measures, the Paris Agreement highlights the importance of REDD-plus, a framework to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries. On the other hand, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, adopted at the 3rd United Nations World Conference on Disaster Reduction, emphasizes the need to address climate change adaptation and the role of forests reducing the impacts of climate-related disasters.
This side event will explore the potential of forests for mitigating climate change as well as for adapting to climate change in the tropics. REDD-plus, one of the important international climate mitigation commitments, can contribute to reducing deforestation and forest degradation keeping forests in good condition and maximize forests' capacity for natural disaster risk reduction. In the other hand, forests provide valuable direct and indirect ecosystems service which are crucial for the adaptation of people to the adverse impact of climate change. In some areas in the world, those ecosystem services provided by forests are the only safety net for the poor and most vulnerable people to cope with extreme events (droughts, floods, etc.). In this side event, we would like to discuss not only the potential of forest-based mitigation and adaptation measures but also obstacles for achieving them.
The event will feature six short presentations on REDD-plus and Forest-based Disaster Risk Reductions (F-DRR) and a panel discussion, which will also include comments and queries from the (online) participants.
The event will be broadcasted on YouTube Live. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCnRGKwNMXM&ab_channel=森林総研チャンネル)
