Purpose of the Event
Japan is located in a climate zone where heavy rains caused by typhoons and rainy seasons occur frequently, and has long suffered from frequent mountain disasters. To adapt such environment, Japan has developed and applied Forest-based Disaster Risk Reduction (F-DRR) technique that utilizes the functions of forests and trees to reduce the occurrence of mountain disasters. F-DRR is expected to be an effective climate change adaptation measure in developing countries by implementing it in upstream of river basins at relatively low cost. Since FY2020, FFPRI has been researching and developing with the aim of supporting the international deployment of F-DRR technologies by the private sector in Japan. In this year's international seminar, Professor Kazutoki Abe of Nihon University will give a keynote lecture on the role of forest root systems in disaster prevention and mitigation. In addition, we will present the results of FFPRI's research in the mountains of northern Vietnam, as well as on the challenges and possibilities for the international deployment of F-DRR projects funded by international organizations and the Japanese government. Invited speakers from overseas will then provide feedback on their perspectives on the ground and discuss future possibilities and challenges in deployment of F-DRR in their countries.
